News from the Adamant Studio

My freshly-acquired workshop!

It’s not much to look at right now but we just signed the lease yesterday. I’ve managed to secure a headquarters large enough to have a dedicated workshop. If all goes according to plan, the Adamant Studio will soon been in operation once again and I can start making new Seraph Blades! Can’t wait!

Stay tuned for more news and, as always, happy hunting.

The Forging of Azrael

DSC_0312

At long last, I am pleased to present you with the Seraph blade Azrael. It’s been finished for some time now, but I have only had a chance to post about it now.

Azrael is the largest and longest blade I have ever crafted at the time of this posting. Its total length comes in at a whopping 30 inches. It can be wielded with one hand or two though due to it’s length and weight, I recommend using both hands.

This was the last blade to be forged in the Adamant Studio in Montreal before I moved to Finland and I’d like to share with you the making of my favourite sword to date.

I’ve Landed In Finland!

2015-08-20 17.24.03

What a beautiful place it is. I’ve been here for about five days now but I only just got a chance to make a post now. It’s been crazy. I’m still struggling to find an apartment here and Finnish language lessons. Luckily I have some new friends helping me out.

As you may guess, I do not have my workshop set up here yet so I CANNOT MAKE SERAPH BLADES RIGHT NOW. Please watch this blog for announcements of when I have my new work space and tools and stock to sell. Sorry for the inconvenience! I’m sure you can understand my situation. It’s a little difficult starting a new life in a new country. I estimate I will have a new workshop sometime in late October so if you need a Seraph blade starting in November, I can probably do that for you. I will start a list of future orders and let you know as soon as I am open for business. Thank you so much for your patience.

In the meantime, I’ve been fooling around with a photo series highlighting funny cultural differences as I find my way around Helsinki. A friend suggested that I put it on a blog somewhere … hmm, I wonder where I could do that … I wonder …

How to Run a Writers’ Circle

It’s a bit of a departure from my usual “Ooh Shiny!” swords and whatnot, but ultimately, I am a writer and I do writerly things.  One of those writerly things is providing support to my fellow creative people. For three years, I have run the Bonavista Writers’ Circle in Montreal: a group of writers of various skill levels and interests who come together to brainstorm, edit, critique each other’s work, and provide workshops for skill sharing.  We’ve all learned so much together and come through as stronger, more confident writers.

I’m not able to run the Circle anymore because my wife and I are moving to Finland for work. I’m saddened at having to leave behind this amazing group of people, but I will look back on our time together with pride and a smile. The Circle has taught me a lot, and I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned about running a group like this. Chances are, if there isn’t a Circle in your area, you’ll have to do what we did, and create your own.

The Tiniest Shadowhunter

It seems that the wee little Hunter is pleased with her Seraph Blade, Hamaliel. Here’s a sneak peak at her costume.

Cutest. Thing. Ever.

Shaping the New Blade

Just a sneak preview of the new sword in progress! It is the longest blade I’ve ever done so I’m keeping it a bit thicker in the center to preserve its strength. Please pardon the ridiculous pillowcase on my head. It’s the only way I can keep the acrylic dust out of my hair! Otherwise I look like I’ve been spontaneously snowed on.

It’s another sunny day so it looks like I will have a chance to finish the shaping today! Until next time, happy hunting!

New Seraph Blade Commission

That’s right folks, I’m at it again! Have a sneak peek at the latest Shadowhunter sword design:

I was contacted a few days ago with this reference photo:

And asked if I could do something similar as a Seraph Blade. Why yes! Yes I can.

The Forging of Hamaliel – A Shadowhunter Dagger

DSC_0232

This is the seraph blade that I made for Randi’s wee Shadowhunter daughter. The grip, as you can see, is made for the small hand of a child and while it is a dagger to most of us, it will make a nicely sized short-sword for her.

How did I make it? Well read on and see!  Continue reading “The Forging of Hamaliel – A Shadowhunter Dagger”

But I Don’t Wanna! – What to do when your writing is stuck

I found a lovely video by Bookishpixie that neatly summarizes how to get out of a writing slump. Always a good reminder!

And now you know! Thanks Bookishpixie!

A sample of things to come! This seraph blade has its basic shaping completed. Hours more of smoothing and polishing await it.

Each blade is designed to the buyer’s specifications. We start with a basic model, make modifications, and shape the blade as desired.
