What’s on Ethan’s Table This Week?

This week, we have an up-sized Jahoel with an LED in the making. (Far right) It’s going to be a VERY special project and I’m super excited to bring it to life.  It will be something you’ve never seen before from the Studio!

The blade with the white handle is still a mystery project. Anyone care to guess what it is? I’ll give you a hint: it has nothing to do with Shadowhunters. Don’t worry. There’ll be plenty more opportunities to figure it out!

The ring sword and leaf blade have received their first polish and are looking very lovely. The rings have to be removed for the polishing process so their colour plating won’t be damaged. You’ll see them again, promise.

The site continues to undergo renovations. Thanks everyone for being patient!

It’s not what it looks like!

Okay so … I was testing out a new brand of polymer clay for making sword handles. Sadly, it doesn’t quite work the way I’m used to so this particular version of the handle didn’t really work out the way I wanted it to.

No, you don’t understand. It REALLY REALLY DIDN’T WORK OUT THE WAY I WANTED IT TO.

Whoops

I was not pleased.

Oh well. I’ll just have to experiment some more. I guess I’ll just … make this into a pencil holder … or something …

Updated Seraph Blade Tutorial

At long last, I have updated my tutorial on how to make Seraph Blades. Now you can see precisely how I make my creations. If you’ve got the tools and the tenacity, you too can play the part of an Iron Sister!

Azrael gets SHINY

Awwwww yes look at what just came out of the studio today!

Azrael Shiny

This Azrael is equipped with a genuine leather grip done in silver and black, colours inspired by the TV show. Of course, it has my own little twist.

Lookin’ super srs as I concentrate on taking a good photo. As you can see, the glow is noticeable even in a brightly lit room. But let’s take it in the dark shall we?

IMG_0503

All bathroom selfies should have a sword. As you can see, because I left the pommel uncovered by the leather, you get a nice little crescent of light there where it reflects off the fan-shaped crest.

IMG_0502

Unintentionally Silent Brother kind of shot going on here… Azrael provides its own dramatic lighting.

How about the mechanics behind the magic?

Here we have my go-to illuminator: the Flatlight (TM). I’ve removed the keychain that comes with it and put in a small length of  elastic cord for easy retrieval. Without this aid, it’s a bit of a pain to extract the light since it fits so snugly. The flap shuts with a simple Velcro closure. Now you see it …

… now you don’t!

As this beauty wings its way toward the USA, a new project gets shifted up to my worktable. I now have all crafting slots full and one project in the queue. Stay tuned for more crafting adventures! Coming up, we have rune engraving, the longest of longswords, two never-before-seen new designs, and a long awaited secret project…

Hollow Vengeance – Update

Just a quick note to let y’all know that Chapter 6 of Blood of Midnight: A Hollow Vengeance is finished. That leaves me with seventeen more to go. Not bad!

I’m enjoying having a look over my notes and plans for what I want to happen in each chapter and happily flouting it if I don’t like it. This has not been my habit in the past. I tend to like to make plans and stick to them but I’ve been much more liberal with my writing lately. Yay! It’s less taxing this way.

Blood of Midnight Short Fiction Update

The next short story I’d like to present for your reading pleasure will be about Casey’s decision to leave his life of yak-herding to make his fortune as a mercenary. Naturally, his father is not pleased.

As is the bane of my existence, I have yet to decide when along the timeline the story should start. Events for me are a continuous stream, much like real-life history. That, however, is bad storytelling and I wish only to give you the interesting bits to read.

Send some good mojo my way y’all! I’ll get on it as soon as I can.

Short Stories Report

Hi y’all, just a quick post to let you know that the When Casey Met Staruff short story is a little later than I wanted it to be but now that it’s had some feedback from my writer buddies it’s much better than the first draft! I’m excited to bring it to you soon. End of this week is my latest estimate. Also, as an apology for my lateness, I’ll be giving y’all an extra short story that is not set in the Blood of Midnight storyverse. Ooooh something different!

A big thank you goes out to my bros in the Bonavista Writers’ Circle for the editing help and for an awesome meeting this past weekend. You all rock.

Short Story Update

Got the preliminary draft done on When Casey Met Staruff. Needs a bit of editing but hopefully I can get that done and have it out by the end of the month. Ideally, I’d like to put out two short stories a month for y’all. We’ll see whether or not that ends up being reasonable.

For the time-being I’m making use of my novel character template to flesh out Casey and Staruff a bit more. This story has been eye-opening in terms of who these characters are. I never realized how difficult it would be to write Casey all by himself. I’ve always relied on the banter between him and Staruff to accomplish what I need to within the story. But there’s much more to these characters than I knew.

Another difficulty I’ve come across is determining the appropriate body weight for an 8’2″ mercenary … Yeah. BMI doesn’t even begin to cover something like that. Got to account for muscle-to-fat ratio plus the weight of bones at the density they would need to be to comfortably support someone of that size. Rawr! Well, I’ll work it out somehow.

Until next time, y’all! Thanks for stopping by.

Happy Spring!

Oh fuck off …

ANYWAY, just a little post to say I’m finished with the first draft of Chapter 1 of Hollow Vengeance. Now I’m going to work on another short story, this time featuring Casey and Staruff, my crazy mercenaries. Ever wonder how these two guys met? Prepare yourself! All shall be revealed! Okay maybe not all … but this particular detail.

Stay warm y’all!

Cover Update

This, I hope, will be the last time I have to upload a cover to Lulu. At least on this project. Haha! After futzing around over fifteen (not exaggerating) different iterations of the cover, I have one that finally looks like there will be NO overlap on the covers from the spine.

Many thanks go out to my tireless graphic designer, Kristy Laporte. You are full of win. Proof is ordered once again. All copies from now on will be Second Edition. People who bought the book within the first month and a half of availability now have a special version that will never be printed again. Woot!
