Does This Costume Make Me Look Racist?

So, I’ve had some really interesting conversations lately. The good kind of interesting. Around this time of year, I see a whole lot of debate going on as to what costumes are and aren’t acceptable to wear.

I’m pretty sure no one thinks this is acceptable.

I have a few simple benchmarks for this kind of thing so I’ll just mention ’em here and you can see if you think it’ll help you decide what to wear:

1. Is it a specific character? (ie: An Indian VS Sitting Bull, or Pochahontas) If it is, and you’re sincerely dressing as that person because you like them, not to make fun of them, then that is not a caricature/racial stereotype. Go right ahead.

2. Is it something you’re actually afraid of? If so, go right ahead and empower yourself by putting on the face of your inner demons for a night. Samhain is the single most appropriate Holy Day for fear work. Do not let other people get in the way of your therapy or your expression of spirituality. They have no right to do that either.

3. Has someone told you your costume offends them? If so, ask them if they are part of the cultural/religious group you are portraying. If they are not, disregard their opinion. Oftentimes people who get offended on behalf of other people end up being wrong and members of the social group in question don’t actually care or think it’s funny too.

4. Does the costume have “Sexy” in the title? If so, it’s probably ridiculous.

Just my two cents. Take it for what it’s worth.

The Spider’s Parlour

The decorating of the living room is finished! And I’m completely exhausted. But here are some pictures for you!

Rethinking Battles

Just a quick update to let y’all know that I finished editing chapter 12. I had to add in a lot more detail and rework one of the key features of the battle which I think I did handily. We shall see what Alex thinks!

Also, I just finished purchasing the last of my Samhain and Dia de los Muertos decorations … I swear. No more. … really. Last shopping trip. Mhum.

Samhain Decorations

Hurrah! I finally finished my wall display. And in all the days I’ve been working with my art scalpel with never an injury … I cut my dang finger on the extra paper  that I was stuffing into the recycling. Go figure.

It looks much better when lit obviously but I won’t be able to snap a photo of that until after sundown. The boxes are all repurposed from things I’ve bought like a kitchen scale or laptop or what-have-you. Painted black. The pictures are cut from old calendars while the mask and pseudo jack o’ lantern (Box o’ lantern?) were my creations. Hurray for reusing things!

It’s that time of year again …

Here’s a sneak preview of my Samhain decorations.

Doesn’t look as good with the flash on but hopefully I’ll be able to snap a photo of it lit up when I figure out this camera.

I Hate Rocky Horror Picture Show

Image

I often get asked why I hate Rocky Horror Picture Show. A lot of people know how much I love costuming, Halloween, decorating, and musicals and, as such, as soon as October rolls around, the Rocky Horror invites start pouring into my inbox.

I got my first one of the season today so I thought I’d post my contribution to the interesting conversation it sparked. Feel free to discuss as long as you remain respectful about it. Continue reading “I Hate Rocky Horror Picture Show”
