Amazon wants to sell for less? Whoa!

Here’s an interesting article regarding the price of ebooks. Amazon is battling it out with Hachette for the right to price ebooks lower to reach a wider market. This could be big news guys. Finally, reasonably priced books for all!

A Message from the Amazon Books Team

Dear Readers,

Just ahead of World War II, there was a radical invention that shook the foundations of book publishing. It was the paperback book. This was a time when movie tickets cost 10 or 20 cents, and books cost $2.50. The new paperback cost 25 cents — it was ten times cheaper. Readers loved the paperback and millions of copies were sold in just the first year. Continue reading “Amazon wants to sell for less? Whoa!”

Createspace VS Lulu – Why I’m Switching

I have big news guys! I’m switching publishers for my novel, Blood of Midnight: The Broken Prophecy. Up until now, I’ve been with Lulu and as of now I will be changing over to Createspace.

There are several reasons for this and I want to present them here for you so that readers will know what they’re getting and anyone interested in self-publishing as I have will get a good idea as to which company’s services they might like to use.

First, let’s talk about the quality of the product. Here is a side-by-side comparison.

On the left is Lulu’s version of my book. On the right is Createspace’s. Continue reading “Createspace VS Lulu – Why I’m Switching”

Busy Season

Just a quick note to let you all know that I’ve just finished chapter 10 of Hollow Vengeance and starting work on 11. This season is really busy for me because of all the camping trips and festivals and all sorts of activities that we’ve got to do while we have warm weather. Ah, summers are all too brief here!

But although progress is slow, it continues. Perhaps a new short story is in order? Hmm! It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Casey and Staruff.

More Map-Making Goodness

I’ve had to pause in writing a scene due to the necessity of more research on what I intend to do. I know it sounds vague but I don’t want to spoil it for you! Let’s just say it has a lot to do with explosions and physics.

In the meantime, here’s some more research I’m doing on map-making. I intend for Hollow Vengeance to have a map in it. I may even release a second edition of Broken Prophecy with a map. It really does add something special to the book! Not sure as to whether I’ll do the book-worthy map myself or have someone else pretty-up my work. We’ll see how good I can get it. I’ll post up progress shots … probably. Hehehehe.

World Building Exercise – Maps!

Hi guys! I’m currently trucking away on chapter 8 of Hollow Vengeance but in the meantime, to give you something shiny to look at, I stumbled on this neat world-creation website.

Check it out!

It explains nicely and clearly how to go about creating a map, what considerations to take, and why geography works the way it does to create all those neat little features we have like the Grand Canyon, or the volcanoes of Hawaii.

Scribd’s Improved Copyright Protection Systems Reaping Results for Smashwords Authors

Scribd’s Improved Copyright Protection Systems Reaping Results for Smashwords Authors.

Good news from Smashwords! Indie authors typically don’t make much money unless they’re lucky enough to go viral.  As such, it’s great to see companies protecting our modest profits and listening to our concerns.

I keep my prices as absolutely low as possible. Some people think this means I undervalue my work. I don’t. I aim to make my book accessible to people of limited income because I remember the not-so-great feeling of browsing Chapters as a broke student writing down the titles of all the books I wanted to buy when I had the money. That’s like going to Disneyland just to sit outside the gates and look longingly at all the things you can’t enjoy.

I don’t believe in doing douchebaggy things like using DRM protection which only serves to annoy paying customers. So, it’s nice to see Scribd doing this and allowing we indie authors to keep our prices reasonable without worrying so much about pirates cutting into our pay. Way to go guys!

Chapter Four Update

Hurrah! Chapter 4 of Blood of Midnight: A Hollow Vengeance is completed! Time for me to start penning that short story for y’all.

Also, I’d like to share with you a cake I baked for the two year anniversary celebration of Bonavista Writers’ Circle. If you’re a writer yourself, chances are, you recognize the joke: the most useless feedback you can ever get.

Hehehehe. Until next time guys, stay awesome.

Blood of Midnight Short Fiction Update

The next short story I’d like to present for your reading pleasure will be about Casey’s decision to leave his life of yak-herding to make his fortune as a mercenary. Naturally, his father is not pleased.

As is the bane of my existence, I have yet to decide when along the timeline the story should start. Events for me are a continuous stream, much like real-life history. That, however, is bad storytelling and I wish only to give you the interesting bits to read.

Send some good mojo my way y’all! I’ll get on it as soon as I can.

Some Happy News

Jamie Wyman’s Kickstarter for Unveiled is funded! Thanks so much to everyone who supported her either financially or by boosting the signal. Now we get to read the sequel to Wild Card!

In other news, chapter 4 of Blood of Midnight: A Hollow Vengeance is completed. I’m moving right along with the novel as scheduled. If I keep up this pace, it may even be done before winter. Wouldn’t that be great? Yaaay!

Stay awesome y’all!
